tips

• Get Comfy
Wear casual, comfortable clothes and shoes you can really walk in. If you’re covering a big event, carry a backpack, water and maybe a little food.

• Time It
While the pickings are best in the wee hours—many diehard flea fans arrive at 4 a.m with flashlights in tow—dealers don’t want to carry things home so check back at booths you liked at the end of the day for deals.

• Dig In
Since you’ll be digging for treasures, bring gloves and moist towelettes.

• Jot It Down
Take lots of notes. On a piece of paper or in a small notebook, record the price and  location of items you are interested in. This is also the time to record measurements.

• Haggle Away
Dealers don’t expect to get the prices they set so don’t be afraid to offer what you’d like to pay.
