French Country Flavor
With ideas lifted from a cheerful French fabric, decorative painter Brenda McPeek added dollops of color to an all-white kitchen in Overland Park, Kansas

At A Glance:
• Color-glazing adds warmth to plain white cabinetry
• Hand-painted tiles copied from fabric create a one-of-a-kind backsplash
• Coordinating floorcloth unites kitchen and dining areas with style

Charm On A Budget
Home Depot designer Lorrie O'Neil faced an under-sized budget and an overdose of doorways when she took on the kitchen for a charity-sponsored showhouse (a 1905 Colonoal Revival in Topeka, Kansas). Her solution called for offing one wall to eliminate a door, and unifying the space around an extra-long center island.

At A Glance:
• Pressed-tin ceiling lookalike is easily and inexpensively achieved with wallpaper and paint
• Hidden lighting -- under countertops and above cabinets -- adds softness and romance
• Faux-painted tiles transform a cheap plywood floor
