accessorize 1We rev up a neutral room with colorful additions
by Mary Seehafer Sears

Can’t paint the walls? Don’t want to? For anyone putting together the basic “bones” of a room (walls, couch, lamps), it actually makes sense to start with neutrals; they’re the ideal background for decorating. Then “bump up” the look with colorful accessories you can change as your tastes evolve. It’s easier (and cheaper) to change pillows / candles / curtains than to buy a new couch.
“A good neutral sofa with clean lines never goes out of style,” says Phyllis Rick of Sitting Pretty Interiors in Ashburn, Virginia, who relies on the magic of color to make all her rooms sing. “Make your house a happy place, your sanctuary,” says Rick. “You want to feel good in your own retreat.” Take a look at what an afternoon’s-worth of accessorizing did for this room, and learn how you can do it, too!
